About Us:
Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Spiri Robotics is a cutting-edge technology company specializing in the development of advanced drones for a variety of applications, including industrial operations, government services, and scientific research. Our team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of UAV technology, and we are looking for a skilled and driven Mechanical Design Engineer to join our dynamic team.
About You:
As a Mechanical Design Engineer at Spiri Robotics, you will play a critical role in the development of high-performance UAVs and autonomous systems. You will be responsible for designing and optimizing the mechanical components and systems that ensure the stability, durability, and efficiency of our drones. Working alongside electrical engineers, firmware developers, and other technical teams, you will create innovative solutions that integrate seamlessly into our UAV platforms. Your designs will impact every aspect of the drone's performance, from structural integrity to aerodynamics, thermal management, and payload integration.
Responsibilities:
* Mechanical System Design: Design, model, and prototype mechanical components and subsystems for drones, ensuring they meet performance, reliability, and safety standards. Focus on optimizing structural design, aerodynamics, and weight distribution for efficient flight performance. * 3D Modeling & CAD Design: Create detailed 3D models and CAD drawings using tools such as SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar design software. Develop complex assemblies and produce accurate tolerances and bill of materials (BOM). * Thermal & Structural Analysis: Perform finite element analysis (FEA) and thermal simulations to ensure that components can withstand the environmental conditions they will operate in. Design for thermal management and material selection to prevent overheating and ensure the long-term durability of drone systems. * Mechanical Integration: Work closely with the Electrical Engineering and Firmware Development teams to ensure seamless integration of mechanical, electrical, and software systems. Collaborate on the design of battery packs, sensor housing, payloads, and flight control components. * Prototype Development & Testing: Build and test prototypes of new mechanical components and systems. Lead hands-on testing and validation of mechanical designs to ensure their functionality in real-world conditions. Iterate designs based on test results and feedback. * Manufacturing Support: Provide design specifications and work closely with manufacturing teams to ensure that components are produced accurately, cost-effectively, and on time. Create clear assembly instructions, manufacturing drawings, and ensure that designs are scalable for production. * Collaborative Problem Solving: Participate in brainstorming sessions and problem-solving exercises with the cross-functional engineering team to create solutions to complex design challenges, especially in the areas of unstructured environment navigation (e.g., through tunnels, forests, or underwater). * Innovation & Research: Stay up-to-date with the latest trends in mechanical engineering and drone technology. Research new materials, manufacturing processes, and technologies that can enhance the capabilities and reliability of our UAVs. * Mentorship & Teamwork: Collaborate with junior engineers, providing guidance and mentorship on design practices, problem-solving, and prototyping. Help foster a team culture of innovation and technical excellence.
Performance Objectives:
To be discussed during the technical interview stage.
Qualifications:
Education: Experience: Technical Expertise: Additional Skills:
* A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related field.
* A minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in mechanical design, structural analysis, and aerodynamics, preferably within the UAV, robotics, or aerospace industries.
* Proficiency in CAD modeling tools like SolidWorks, AutoCAD, or similar.
* Experience with FEA (Finite Element Analysis) and thermal simulations for component testing.
* Strong understanding of mechanical systems, materials science, mechanical tolerances, and aerodynamics for flight stability and efficiency.
* Familiarity with manufacturing processes such as 3D printing, CNC machining, and injection molding.
* Experience designing and prototyping mechanical systems for autonomous platforms or UAVs.
* Knowledge of thermal management techniques and payload integration.
* Hands-on prototyping and testing experience to validate and refine designs.
* Strong problem-solving skills and an ability to tackle design challenges in a rapidly evolving, high-tech environment.
* Experience collaborating with interdisciplinary teams (e.g., Electrical Engineering, Firmware, and R&D teams) to integrate mechanical components into larger systems.
* Ability to work with vendors and manufacturers to oversee the production of designed components.
