About Us:

Based in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Spiri Robotics is a cutting-edge technology company specializing in the development of advanced drones for a variety of applications, including industrial operations, government services, and scientific research. Our team is dedicated to pushing the boundaries of UAV technology, and we are looking for a skilled and driven Electrical Engineer to join our dynamic team.

About You:

As an Electrical Engineer at Spiri Robotics, you will play a key role in designing and optimizing electrical systems that power our autonomous drones. You’ll work on everything from power management systems to battery design, sensor integration, and digital signal processing (DSP), ensuring that our UAVs can operate seamlessly in some of the world’s most challenging environments. You’ll work closely with our Mechanical Engineering team and other interdisciplinary groups to create systems that are reliable, efficient, and safe.

This is a great opportunity for someone passionate about innovation, collaboration, and leading-edge technology. You will have the chance to drive technical excellence and contribute to the development of drone systems that can change industries.

Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

Electrical System Design & Integration: Lead the design and optimization of both analog and digital circuits for power management, battery systems, motor control, and sensor integration. Your designs will directly impact the overall performance and reliability of our drones.

Battery Design & Management: Oversee the design and development of high-performance battery packs, managing all aspects of battery chemistry, voltage/current specifications, thermal management, and charging systems. You’ll ensure the reliable and efficient operation of the power systems within our UAVs.

Power Distribution & Energy Efficiency: Design power distribution systems that optimize energy flow for UAV subsystems like motors, sensors, and communications. Your focus will be on improving efficiency and faster battery swaps to minimize downtime during operations.

Digital Signal Processing (DSP): Apply your strong theoretical understanding of digital signal processing to enhance our drones’ data handling, sensor processing, and communication systems. You will work on improving signal integrity to ensure accurate data collection and real-time decision-making.

Risk Mitigation & Standards Compliance: Ensure that electrical designs adhere to IEEE standards, particularly in the areas of risk evaluation and risk mitigation. You'll ensure our systems meet safety, regulatory, and quality standards in all phases of development.

Connector & Port Design: Develop and integrate connectors and ports (including USB and power-over-ethernet systems) into drone systems. You’ll ensure these components meet error tolerance, safety protocols, and reliability standards.

Collaborative Engineering: Work closely with our Mechanical Engineering team to integrate your electrical designs into physical hardware. This includes developing charging stations, smart battery systems, and other hardware modules that complement the UAV systems we create.

Firmware Integration: Collaborate with firmware developers to ensure that electrical systems and firmware work in harmony. This includes developing designs that ensure logic-level shifting and robust communication protocols for data transfer and control.

Innovation & Research: Stay on top of the latest innovations in drone technology, especially in areas like power management, battery systems, and autonomous navigation. You will help drive new research initiatives that improve reliability, cost efficiency, and performance.

Performance Objectives:

To be discussed at the technical interview stage, since the performance objectives for this role may change as we take on new projects.

Qualifications:

Education:
* A Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.

Experience:
* Minimum of 3-5 years of professional experience in electrical system design, power management, and embedded systems. Prior experience in aerospace, robotics, or UAV development is highly desirable.

Technical Expertise:
* Strong understanding of analog and digital electronics, including circuit design and PCB layout.
* Battery Design: Experience designing battery management systems (BMS), specifying voltage and current requirements, and selecting materials.
* Hands-on experience with low-frequency electrical measurement instruments (oscilloscopes, multimeters, etc.).
* Knowledge of signal processing techniques and digital systems for autonomous applications.
* Familiarity with IEEE standards for risk mitigation, electrical safety, and system compliance.
* Expertise in connector types, ports, and communication protocols, including power-over-ethernet (PoE).

Additional Skills:
* Strong understanding of environmental integration for autonomous systems, particularly drones in unstructured environments (e.g., forests, tunnels, space).
* Familiarity with charging systems for UAVs and the design of smart battery packs.
* Experience collaborating with cross-functional teams (Mechanical Engineering, Firmware, etc.) to build integrated systems.
* Familiarity with firmware development and its application in electrical system design.
* Ability to obtain and maintain Security Clearance if required.

Why Join Us:

* Work with cutting-edge technology in the drone industry, impacting critical sectors like industry, government, and science.
* Collaborative and innovative team environment.
* Opportunities for growth and advancement within the company.
* Highly competitive salary and benefits package.
